Let&#8217;s be honest, <strong>there\u00a0<em>are<\/em> differences between a\u00a0<em>true<\/em>\u00a0pilgrim and a\u00a0<em>false<\/em> pilgrim<\/strong>. So, in order for everyone to recognize them, here is <strong>a\u00a0truthful\u00a0portrait of the <em>peregrinus veritabilis<\/em><\/strong>*, \u00a0whom deserve our endless reverence and respect!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-56 size-full aligncenter\" title=\"True or false pilgrims? Because <strong>he is inspired by his ancestries from the Middle-Ages<\/strong>, he can&#8217;t decently go on a pilgrimage with some devilish motor-driven engine. He goes, of course, but\u00a0<strong>always by foot<\/strong>. He\u00a0<strong>can eventually drag a donkey or ride a horse<\/strong>, but it is quite as far as the bounds\u00a0go.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim\u00a0<strong>certainly isn&#8217;t a\u00a0bike rider<\/strong>, whatever the pilgrim&#8217;s office says. To pay a visit to our dear lord James by bike&#8230; well, really? How amazing our saint friend has not turned over in his reliquary yet!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even worse<\/strong> than these frauds (yes, my Lords and Ladies, it\u00a0<em>is<\/em> possible!), are all of those who move around by scooter, car, bus, plane or space rocket. <strong>Of this heretic tabooed specie I will speak no more<\/strong>. Unless they steal a <em>true<\/em> pilgrim&#8217;s bed\u00a0right under my nose, in which case I will sue and torment them with no pity.<\/p>\n<h2>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim leaves from his home<\/h2>\n<p>His adventure starts when he gets out of <strong>his bed<\/strong>. A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim puts his first lunch in his bag<strong> in his kitchen<\/strong>; he slips into\u00a0his coat and caplet and puts his round-shaped hat on in <strong>his entrance hall<\/strong>; he double-locks <strong>his front door<\/strong> and tosses the key out. An action he&#8217;ll soon regret when he&#8217;ll realize he forgot to take the scallop and the pilgrim&#8217;s passport he left on an obvious spot next to the trinket bowl. Only when he&#8217;ll break a pane of window, get his treasures, call a glazier and give the man 3\/4 of his pilgrimage&#8217;s budget will he eventually <strong>leave to Santiago with a free and light heart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The pilgrim who live in Padr\u00f3n, Betanzos, Silleda, San Marcos and many other places although are <strong>embarrassing singularities<\/strong> to this feature. Shortly said,<strong> all the pilgrims living\u00a0within 62 miles from Santiago<\/strong>, or in the North-West of Spain. They will not be able to become <em>true<\/em> pilgrims\u00a0<strong>unless they get away from Santiago before they return to it<\/strong> because, as one knows&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim comes from afar<\/h2>\n<p>Let the callosities patiently grown by many miles under his feet be the proof of it! He whose pilgrimage <strong>starts at the end<\/strong> or he who <strong>doesn&#8217;t walk enough<\/strong> deserves neither the honors nor the respect of the pilgrim&#8217;s guild. <strong>The farthest the start is, the greatest the glory will be<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-58 aligncenter\" title=\"Distance sign in Strasbourg, France (1454mi)\" src=\"http:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Panneau-alsace-2340km.jpg\" alt=\"Sign alsace 1454mi\" width=\"265\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Panneau-alsace-2340km.jpg 480w, https:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Panneau-alsace-2340km-300x133.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim\u00a0<strong>hisses<\/strong> Spanish people who started\u00a0in the North-West and\u00a0<strong>makes friend<\/strong> with the others; he cheerfully\u00a0<strong>congratulates<\/strong> anyone who started at the beginning of a Iberian\u00a0way (Porto, Sevilla, Valencia, Barcelona and <del>Roncesvalles<\/del> Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port); he\u00a0<strong>admires<\/strong> anyone who started from one of the historical departure-cities in France (Le Puy, Vezelay, Paris or Tours, Arles) and\u00a0<strong>glorifies<\/strong> the ones who started beyond them; he <strong>exalts<\/strong>\u00a0the Portuguese-Belgian-German-Swiss-Austrian-Italian who started in their countries; he\u00a0<strong>blesses<\/strong> the ones who started from the rest of Europe; he\u00a0<strong>canonizes<\/strong> anyone who started from the edge of Asia, the Middle East or Africa; he\u00a0<strong>deifies<\/strong>\u00a0anyone who had to swim before they could walk.<\/p>\n<p>If pilgrims could come by foot from others galaxies, no doubts <strong>they would be<\/strong> <strong>revered<\/strong>\u00a0by any <em>true<\/em> pilgrim.<\/p>\n<h2>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim carries\u00a0what he needs<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-60 size-medium\" title=\"A true pilgrim carries what he needs\" src=\"http:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Sac-gozo-252x300.jpg\" alt=\"Backpack Way Santiago\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Sac-gozo-252x300.jpg 252w, https:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Sac-gozo.jpg 319w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/>May any<strong>\u00a0cheater having his backpack transported for him<\/strong>\u00a0be\u00a0reported! Anyone\u00a0who uses the assistance of a luggage transporter or worse, who plans his\u00a0trip with a sweeper-car <strong>must be a fraud<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Those\u00a0having\u00a0to part from their backpack because of a\u00a0<strong>health issue<\/strong>\u00a0that could\u00a0eventually lead them to their death if they were to carry it themselves\u00a0<strong>may be put up with<\/strong> (conditions apply to tolerance, granted after interviews and convincing proofs). Anyone else (including those\u00a0who fail the exam) will be properly punished and have his title of genuine pilgrim removed from him.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that <strong>the crushing weight of an overloaded backpack isn&#8217;t a acceptable argument<\/strong>, given that anyone should know&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim is frugal and has no wealth<\/h2>\n<p>As a result,\u00a0<strong>he could very well do without a backpack<\/strong>, as his fortune comes down to what he wears on his back and a half toothbrush. (And this brings the topic of the backpack&#8217;s portability\u00a0to a close, because nearly nothing in the bag = light bag = portable\u00a0bag!)<\/p>\n<p>So, a <em>true<\/em> pilgrim is <strong>poor,<\/strong>\u00a0as clearly stated in the booklet\u00a0given with the French Christian&#8217;s\u00a0pilgrim&#8217;s\u00a0passport:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The future [and needless to say,\u00a0<em>true]<\/em> pilgrim about to\u00a0<strong>leave family and\u00a0possessions<\/strong> knows he will change his condition and\u00a0<strong>join\u00a0the impoverished<\/strong>. The ritual [of departure] depicts\u00a0the gravity and radicalism of this\u00a0<strong>transformation to the state of a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>pauper<\/strong>*<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and a peregrinus*: <strong>the\u00a0dispossession\u00a0of anything possible<\/strong> and the reliance\u00a0on God.<\/p>\n<p>Bag and staff are then the only attributes of <strong>the one who becomes a poor and a pilgrim<\/strong> and are given by the priest before benediction.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If even the Church says so&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On the practical side<\/strong>, a <em>true<\/em> pilgrim says &#8220;<strong>thanks, but no thanks<\/strong>&#8221; to\u00a0comfortable hotels and private accommodations. He prefers <strong>public or parish accommodations<\/strong> where the fun is all about boxing in as many bunk beds as possible in one room. Better,\u00a0<strong>accommodations\u00a0with\u00a0<em>donativo<\/em><\/strong><em>*<\/em>\u00a0that allow him to sleep on a cozy\u00a0mattress (and to be spoiled) without paying a single coin. Better (again!) <strong>a bit of flat and sheltered grass<\/strong>\u00a0that allows him sleep outside without breaking his back or being soaked. As for eating,\u00a0<em><strong>vade retro<\/strong>*<\/em> feasts, gourmet menus and others fine food. There&#8217;s nothing like the famous <del>\u20ac6<\/del> <del>\u20ac8<\/del> \u20ac10 (sometimes \u20ac12 already!)\u00a0<em><strong>menu del peregrino<\/strong>*<\/em>! Apart maybe from a slightly dry\u00a0<em><strong>bocadillo<\/strong><\/em>* or some\u00a0<strong>fruits and nuts<\/strong> hand-picked in a orchard on the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tops<\/strong> of a <em>true<\/em> pilgrim&#8217;s pilgrimage are, let&#8217;s sum it up, <strong>no bag, sleeping out in the open, eating out of nature<\/strong>. There really is nothing like it, although to be honest,\u00a0<strong>this rare subspecies of\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>peregrinus veritabilis<\/strong><\/em><strong>* is quite endangered&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-61 \" title=\"A true pilgrim has no wealth\" src=\"http:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Coquille-fisterra.jpg\" alt=\"Scallop Way Santiago\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Coquille-fisterra.jpg 480w, https:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Coquille-fisterra-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim is pious<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Why would he be doing a pilgrimage otherwise?<\/strong> Whether he is devoted to the\u00a0Saint James Cult or is a repentant, or a Catholic, or a regular Christian, or a fundamentalist, or an ecstatic mystic, or a feet fetishist or a worshiper of the god Blisteria*, a <em>true<\/em> pilgrim goes to Santiago because\u00a0<strong>he is carried by a boundless faith<\/strong>. He believes in a\u00a0<strong>spiritual reality<\/strong> and ended up walking on a dusty path after he heard\u00a0<strong>a mysterious call<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim visits every church on the way and breaks into the ones that are locked; sacrifices his feet on the altar of the scallop; sleeps only in holly-like accommodations. He can be recognized by the stars in his eyes, the heavy cross on his back and the absence of shoes on his feet. Also by his endless dedication to convert the false pilgrims on the Way to his believes. A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim\u00a0<strong>stands to his faith and isn&#8217;t afraid to share it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim suffers<\/h2>\n<p>The root of this pilgrim tradition is uncertain, maybe inherited of the repentants I just mentioned&#8230; Whatsoever, a <em>true<\/em> pilgrim <strong>suffered, is suffering or will suffer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-62 alignleft\" title=\"A true pilgrim suffers\" src=\"http:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Pieds-pansements-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"bandaged feet Santiago\" width=\"207\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Pieds-pansements-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/santiagoinlove.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/07\/Pieds-pansements.jpg 428w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim can be recognized by his <strong>decrepit-like walk<\/strong>, by his\u00a0<strong>bandaged feet<\/strong>\u00a0and his <strong>prostrate look<\/strong> at the stage. A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim <strong>earns his stripes by the number of blisters he got<\/strong> (bleeding ones score double). The worthiest and most devoted ones win a\u00a0<strong>consolation T-shirt<\/strong> when they arrive in Santiago, one that states the very truthful and famous &#8220;<strong>No pain no glory<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim has <strong>a wide assortment of torments<\/strong> to chose from and to spice things up. Tendinitis, blisters, sprains, fractures but also bed-bug bites, dog bites, tics raids or even stirred up emotions, blues, self-devaluation&#8230;<strong> The list is long and non-exhaustive!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s face it, a <em>true<\/em> pilgrim is a bit <strong>masochistic. Why else would he give away his time off to trudge through dust under any weather<\/strong> instead of hopping on a plane to take it easy and relax on the beach?<\/p>\n<h2>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim is respectful<\/h2>\n<p>He&#8217;s the\u00a0<strong>champion of diversity<\/strong>. Men, women or children; any color on the rainbow, spiritual belief or cultural habit, He likes anyone and shows it. He&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>full of attention for everyone<\/strong>, as he always has a kind word for humans and carrots in his bag for donkeys. He despises the ones who fiddle around with plastic bags at 4 a.m. in a crowded dorm, as much as their friends who use trumpets as an alarm just a 1\/2 hour later.<\/p>\n<p>Even if he feels just like it, a\u00a0<em>true<\/em> pilgrim\u00a0<strong>hold\u00a0his fanciest\u00a0insults back<\/strong> when bikers, heretics, cheaters, no-bagger, tourists, epicureans, rich people, pagans and insolent people who go without pain all pass him once and again.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim also pays <strong>attention to his environment<\/strong>. No paper, tissue, plastic, dropping or toilet paper is left by the side of the way. A <em>true<\/em> pilgrim leaves them a little further or buries them, while the most fundamentalists carry their trash\u00a0around or hold it back until the next stage.<\/p>\n<h2>Finally, a <em>true<\/em> pilgrim is a master of tolerance<\/h2>\n<p><strong>How else could he put up with all the false pilgrims who wander around the Way with total impunity?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Little\u00a0glossary to whoever have troubles with\u00a0languages<\/strong> (words with\u00a0* in the text)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Pauper<\/strong> (latin) = poor; <strong>peregrinus<\/strong> (latin) = pilgrim; <strong>donativo<\/strong> (spanish) = donation;\u00a0<strong>vade retro<\/strong> (latin) = back off, go away, leave;\u00a0<strong>menu del peregrino<\/strong> (spanish) = pilgrim&#8217;s menu;\u00a0<strong>bocadillo<\/strong> (spanish) = sandwich;\u00a0<strong>peregrinus veritabilis<\/strong> (half made-up latin) = truthful pilgrim; <strong>Blisteria<\/strong>\u00a0(fully made-up latin) =\u00a0the god of blisters<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">~<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to the <em>true<\/em> pilgrims who recognized themselves and may hold a grudge as well as to others who are disappointed not to fit with the description of the <em>peregrinus veritabilis<\/em>:\u00a0<\/span>there is\u00a0obviously no smoke without fire, but\u00a0<strong>this is clearly a caricatural and humorous portrait.
